E59: Stop Doing What You Don’t Enjoy: Why It’s Hurting Your Growth & How to Stop

Emma Hine Episode 59

In this episode, I’m diving into something that has the power to completely shift how you grow your business, how you show up, and honestly…how you feel about your business and life every single day.

I'm talking about why we keep doing things we don’t even enjoy (yes, even in business), how that might be the thing slowing your growth, stealing your energy, and keeping you disconnected from what you’re actually here to do.

And don’t worry, this isn’t just theory...I’m giving you practical strategies to help you break that cycle too!

What I cover in this episode:

  • Why conditioning and the need for approval keeps us stuck doing things we don’t enjoy
  • How identity and fear play a role in keeping us doing all the things (even when they feel heavy)
  • Why “everyone else is doing it” energy leads to frustration, burnout, and procrastination
  • Why misaligned action doesn’t just feel bad...it’s actually inefficient for growth
  • How to do a simple audit of your business to see where your energy is leaking
  • Why building your business from your strengths is the fastest path to success
  • The difference between aligned discomfort and forcing strategies that just don’t fit
  • How to start creating systems that support what you love (and ditch what you don’t)

Your challenge this week:
✨ Identify one thing in your business that you don’t enjoy and that’s not actually producing results.
✨ Decide whether you can stop it or do it differently...and then go make it happen.

Remember, growth doesn’t come from more effort...it comes from the right effort.

Ready to live the dream? Then let’s get stuck in…

Hello & Welcome to today’s episode of Dream Business Dream Life.

Today, I’m talking about something that has the power to completely shift how you grow your business, to completely change how you show up, and honestly how you feel about your business, and life for that matter, every single day.

I’m diving into why we keep doing things we don’t enjoy, especially in business and more importantly, how that behaviour might be the very thing slowing your growth, stealing your energy, and keeping you disconnected from you real potential.

And this isn’t just theory, I’m going to give you some strategies today that will help you start breaking that pattern.

So let’s dive in.

Why We End Up Doing Things We Don’t Enjoy?

Why do we fall into this trap? It usually comes down to 3 things.

First Conditioning. We’re trained from early on to value approval. We get praise for doing what’s expected, not necessarily what’s aligned.

Well done Emma you’ve eaten all your dinner…so as a child I think I must clear my plate everytime to get praise. But what if I don’t want to eat the sausages? What do I do? Well if you have ever heard this story before you’ll know hide them in a plant pot…because I want that praise…I want that Well done Emma….so I do whatever I need to make it look like I have eaten up.

Little tip to anyone that tries this don’t forget to remove the evidence…because trust me it is not praise you’ll be getting when they are found a few weeks later!

Next there’s Identity and Fear. We start to identify as someone. Someone who “follows through,” who’s “committed,” or who’s “hardworking,” and so we keep doing that even if that means we have to do things we hate. There’s this fear that if we stop doing the thing, we’ll be seen as flaky, or worse…a failure. I did this exact thing for years…I kept pushing through despite being burnout and miserable as my identity had become someone who works really hard, who has a super successful business and who just keeps going….I was branded a workaholic and I wore that as a badge of honour for many years despite hating it.

And then there is Noise and FOMO. It’s so  easy to feel like you’re the only one not doing something. Everyone’s launching a course, starting a podcast, posting videos every day…so you jump in, without stopping to ask: Does this actually make sense for me?

And it’s sneaky because sometimes we convince ourselves we should like it, or that we’ll eventually grow to love it.

But the result? You’re exhausted, frustrated, and wondering why nothing feels like it’s clicking. Wondering why it feels so hard, why you are just not cut out for it.

Here’s the key thing I want you to take away:

Misaligned action doesn’t just feel bad, it’s inefficient.

You’re slower when you don’t enjoy something.
 Your creativity dries up.
Your audience senses that you’re not fully behind what you’re offering.

And even more when you’re focused on strategies that don’t feel good, you’re literally distracted from the strategies that would work better for you.

If you’re struggling to be on Instagram every day, what’s not happening behind the scenes? Maybe you’re not writing the book you’ve been meaning to write. Maybe you’re neglecting the one offer that could change your entire business.

And over time? This leads to burnout, inconsistency, procrastination, resentment, and even questioning your entire business.

And here’s the real danger: The longer you build your business doing things you don’t enjoy, the more you build a version of success you don’t actually want.

Okay, so now let’s get into the part that actually changes things. How do you stop this cycle? How do you stop doing this you really don’t enjoy.

Lets start by looking at where you are now. An audit if you like.

Write down everything you’re doing right now in your business: content creation, marketing, offers, admin, sales…everything
 For each think, ask yourself…

Does this energise me or drain me?

Am I doing this because I want to, or because I think I should?

This can be uncomfortable, but clarity is so important

Next, I want you to think about your strengths because success happens faster when you build from your strengths, not by forcing yourself to be someone you’re not.

What are you great at that also feels good? If you love deep conversations, maybe your zone of genius is long-form content like podcasts or blogs, not 15-second reels.

If you feel most energised when you are in a room with people then you need to think about how you build in person connection into your business.

If admin drains you then you need to be looking at how you can outsource it.

The people you admire most in your industry? Most of them aren’t doing everything. They’ve chosen their lane, they’ve gone deep with it, and they’ve stayed consistent.

Depth creates results…not just visibility, but actual growth. So chose your lane and stick with it.

Now let’s be very clear here doing things you love doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Sometimes discomfort is necessary. Maybe you don’t love selling but you do love the transformation you provide you’re your clients. You have to sell to give your clients that transformation. That’s aligned discomfort. Totally different from forcing yourself to TikTok dance because “everyone else is.”

And finally when you find something that works and feels aligned, build systems to support it, outsource the things you don’t enjoy and focus your time on the things that light you up.

I want to leave you with this:

You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing. You need to do what feels aligned to you.

Growth doesn’t come from more effort…it comes from right effort.

So here’s your challenge this week:

Identify ONE thing you’re doing in your business right now that you don’t enjoy, that isn’t producing real results.
Decide: Can I stop it entirely, or can I do it differently?
 And commit: Make it happen

And if you want help with this or you just want to share what you’re changing you know where to find me.

Thank you for listening; see you next time.
