Ready to live the dream? Then let’s get stuck in…

Hello & Welcome to today’s episode of Dream Business Dream Life.

Let me ask you something: have you ever had a full to-do list, a big plan for the day... and somehow found yourself cleaning the house, booking a holiday or scrolling social media instead?

Yeah. Same. Been there too…especially with the holidays!

So today we’re diving into procrastination…why we do it, how it shows up in business, the real cost of it, and more importantly, how to stop doing it.

So let’s not procrastinate let’s dive straight in…

First of all, let me bust a myth…procrastination isn’t laziness. You are not lazy if you procrastinate.

It’s not that you don’t care, and it’s not because you’re bad at time management. Procrastination is often just your brain trying to protect you from something uncomfortable…fear, self-doubt, overwhelm, perfectionism.

You know all those things that show up when you are about to do something scary or overwhelming.

Maybe you're scared you’ll mess it up. Or you don’t even know where to start. Or you're holding off because deep down, you want it to be perfect.

Sound familiar? Of course it does…we all do it!

As business owners, we’re constantly stepping into unknowns… launching things, leading people, making decisions. And that creates mental friction. So, your brain says, ‘No’ your brain says Let’s just scroll Instagram instead and of course it tells you that kitchen needs a good clean. It feels safer…less daunting to do things that you are familiar with.

Now procrastination wears a lot of disguises. It might show up as you constantly rewriting your sales page…but never publishing it.

It might be you telling yourself you need one more course before launching that offer.

It could be over-planning instead of doing.

Maybe you are spending 2 hours on Canva making a post…that never goes live.

Or do you keep saying I work better under pressure which actually means I avoided it until I had no choice. This is me…this is my go-to procrastination technique.

And if you’re a solo business owner, there's no one watching. So, it’s easy to delay without noticing the cost.

But there is a cost.

So let’s talk about that cost.

When you procrastinate, you’re not just delaying a task…you’re delaying results.

Money gets left on the table. Opportunities pass. Your team gets stuck waiting on you.

Even worse…your energy drains. Because thinking about what you’re not doing. And that is exhausting.

Procrastination doesn’t feel like a big deal in the moment, but over time, it can really slow down your business growth.

So, you need to be aware of it and you need to do something about it…something that reduces the risk of you doing it over and over again.

So let me share a few things with you; little hacks that have helped me and my clients too.

First up…break it down.
Big tasks feel scary, they feel unachievable and often feel vague which makes your brain panic and shut down. Aka procrastination kicks in. But when you make it bite-sized, it feels doable so your brain goes from ‘ugh’ to okay I can handle that. So, break your big goals down into smaller tasks. If your goal is to launch a new offer…reverse engineer that into small tasks so what are the things you need to do to make it happen such as create your content, set up the tech etc.

Then there is the Power Hour.
Set aside one focused hour where you have no phone, no tabs, just the one thing you’ve been avoiding. This helps to create urgency and remove that decision fatigue. Because often the reason we procrastinate is because we have too much time to get something done. Focused time equals faster action and fewer excuses.

Have a go at the 2-Minute Rule.
If it takes less than 2 minutes, do it now. Book the call. Send the email. Post the reel. This helps to build momentum. Tiny wins lead to bigger wins so just get those little tasks done and off the list.

Find an accountability buddy. A business bestie, a mentor, a family member, your coach…anyone, just someone to hold you accountable.  Tell them what you are doing right now and ask them to check in with you later. You’re more likely to follow through when someone else is watching. Even a simple check-in adds pressure and support.

A little game I like to play is ‘name the fear’
Ask you ‘What am I really avoiding here? Is it criticism, is it failure or is it judgment? Getting clear and honest with that makes it lose its power as once you know the real fear, you can work with it, not against it. You can reframe it and then it feels less daunting and you are more likely to get stuck in.

You will have heard me say this a lot…progress over perfection
“Done” beats “perfect” every single time.
Perfectionism is just procrastination in disguise. Doing something imperfect gets results quicker…tweaking things forever to get it perfect just slows you down and I promise you the more you look at something the more you will keep finding things you can improve.

There are lots more tools and techniques out there so try things and find what works for you.

So here’s todays big takeaway:
Procrastination is a habit. It’s not a flaw, it’s not laziness and it’s definitely not permanent.

The key is to notice it, understand where it’s coming from, and then use simple tools like I shared with you a minute ago to move through it.

If this episode resonated, try one of these tips this week. Just one. and let me know what works for you…I love hearing your wins.

Ok… no more waiting. Go take that next tiny step in your business. You’ve got this.

Thank you for listening; see you next time.
